- Sourdough starter: Active or discard can be used in this recipe. It will add a slight tang to the lemon loaf.
- Eggs: Create stability and structure in the lemon loaf. Adds color and flavor.
- Sugar: Organic cane sugar recommended.
- Sour cream: Adds that moist feel to the sourdough lemon loaf.
- Butter: Makes the lemon loaf rich. Be sure to use high quality butter. You can use salted or unsalted.
- Lemon: You will need one large lemon for the juice and the zest.
- Flour: Bread flour or all purpose flour will work.
- Baking powder: Makes the loaf airy and adds height.
- Salt: Enhances all of the flavors.
How to make Sourdough Lemon Loaf:
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F or 176 C.
- First in a large mixing bowl mix together sourdough starter, eggs, sugar, and sour cream until smooth and creamy.
- After that add in cooled off melted butter, lemon zest, lemon juice and mix all together.
- Sift in salt, baking powder, and flour.
- Mix well until everything is incorporated.
- Butter a loaf pan and add a sling out of parchment paper for an easier way to take the sourdough lemon loaf out of the pan.
- Pour the batter into the loaf pan and bake for about 30 mins. Depending on your oven this time might vary. To make sure the loaf is fully baked place a wooden toothpick right in the middle, if it comes out clean, it’s done. Also the color of the bread should turn golden once it’s done cooking.
- Cool on a cooling rack.
- Make the icing with powdered sugar and lemon juice. Mix well to create a glaze.
- Finally glaze over the sourdough lemon loaf, slice, and serve.

- 100 g sourdough starter active or discard
- 2 eggs about 88 g
- 1 cup sugar 138 g
- 1 cup sour cream 118 g
- 4 tbsp melted butter cooled off
- lemon zest from 1 large lemon about 3 tbsp
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 200 g flour
Icing Ingredients:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
