Tools needed:
- Large mixing bowl
- Parchment paper or Baking mat
- Cookie sheet
- Cooling rack
- Sifter
- Stand mixer
- Hand mixer
- Spatula
Ingredients:
- Sourdough Starter: Active or discard sourdough starter can be used for this recipe. This will add a slight chewy texture to the cookies.
- Condensed Milk: This is the main ingredient that gives the cookies their sweet, rich, and chewy texture. It binds everything together and replaces the liquid in the recipe.
- Flour: You can use all-purpose flour or bread flour. The flour gives structure to the cookies.
- Butter: Butter adds richness, flavor, and tenderness to the cookies. It helps to create a softer, melt-in-your-mouth texture. The fat in the butter also helps the cookies spread as they bake.
- Baking Powder: A leavening agent that help the cookies rise and become light and fluffy. Baking powder works by releasing carbon dioxide when it reacts with moisture and heat, creating air bubbles in the dough.
- Salt: A pinch of salt enhances the flavor and balances the sweetness of the condensed milk.
- Powdered Sugar: Adding a small amount of powdered sugar will sweeten the cookies just a tad more. It also adds crispiness and texture to the cookies.
How to make Sourdough Condensed Milk Cookies:
- In a large mixing bowl sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl whisk the butter in a stand mixer until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes.
- Into to the butter add condensed milk, sugar, and sourdough starter. Mix well until everything is well incorporated, be sure to scrape down the walls of the bowl.
- Fold the sifted flour into the butter mixture with a spatula. Do not over mix the dough, it should be very soft.
- Place the dough into the fridge for about 30 minutes or 1 hour, this will prevent the butter from melting too much.
- Preheat your oven to 350 °F.
- Remove the dough from the fridge and using an ice cream scoop, scoop the dough and form in into a ball. If you’re adding sprinkles or m&ms, add them on here.
- Place on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes or until the bottom of the cookies is golden. These bake fairly quickly so be watchful.
- Remove from the baking sheet to a cooling rack for about 15 minutes.
- If you’re adding a glaze, now is the time to do so. A simple glaze that we love is powdered sugar with lemon juice.
- Enjoy!
